  How it Works

There are over 50,000 public storage locations in the United States, with an estimated 20 million individual units available for rent. People use the service to store all kinds of goods, both personal and business. One would be surprised to see what a storage unit can hold.

Like in any other service out there, some customers end up leaving things behind or not paying the service. Generally, after 90 days of not receiving payments from the customer, the storage facility has the right to auction the goods in that unit in order to recover as much of their loses as possible. I say recover because in most instances the auctions are not a money maker for the storage companies. In many states the practice is that if a unit is auctioned for $150 but the customer only owes $100, a check for the difference will be mailed to that customer. Often the money collected at an auction does not cover even 30 days of rent, leaving the storage company at loss.

An estimated 100,000 plus units are being auctioned every month in the United States alone.

Auctions organized by storage facilities works a little different from the conventional auction you find on Ebay.com or at an estate auction.

All auctions are done at the location of the storage facility. At the time the auction starts the unit to be auctioned is opened and the people present place bids on the unit. Notice that you cannot bid on a specific item in the unit; you would have to bid on the entire unit.

How do I know what is in that unit? What you see is what you get. You can only look from outside, take a note of what you see and bid. Often is hard to tell what is in a unit since many people keep goods stored in boxes or because the unit is so full that it makes it impossible to see everything.

Get ready to move the goods. In many instances the storage company gives you 24 to 48 hours to move everything from the unit. The unit must remain clean and you cannot leave anything there. You must even take the trash or goods you don’t want and dispose of them somewhere else. Storage companies may allow you to rent that unit if you need to keep the goods there for longer.

How to pay: most instances CASH ONLY. Each auction is different but cash is the only sure thing.

Be prepared - Call before you go: all auctions are subject to cancellation in the event of settlement between the landlord and obligated parties.

Be on time – most auctions require registration at which point you will be given a number.
